Is there even a correct way to wear Shapewear? YES.
Have you ever tried pulling up a shapewear and it doesn’t get past your booty? YIKES.
If you’ve ever tried on shapewear for the first time and thought, “This is way too small!” you’re not alone. Many first-timers assume they’ve picked the wrong size when, in reality, they just haven’t been shown how to put it on properly. Unlike regular panties or slips, shapewear is a functional garment designed to sculpt, smooth, and support, which means it fits tighter and needs a little more attention (and strategy) when wearing.
So if you’ve been struggling to wiggle into your shapewear or gave up halfway, here’s a simple guide to help you wear it the right way and fall in love with the fit.
Many assume going down a size will “shape better.” But this often leads to discomfort, bulging, or even rolling. Shapewear is designed to contour, not suffocate. Always refer to the brand's size chart and measure yourself accurately. The size charts are usually for your body and are not the product’s measurements. Do not get mixed up!
Tip: If you're in between sizes, it's usually best to size up for comfort.

Shapewear won’t slide on like butter—or your everyday panties. And that’s perfectly normal. It's a process, and that’s normal. Give yourself a few extra minutes and don’t rush. Trust the process!
Fold or flip ⅓ of the top part of your shapewear outwards. Use both hands to hold the outer part of your shaper. Now, whether it’s a high-waist brief, bodysuit, or full shaping shorts, always step into it, even if it looks like it should go over your head (like a Sottile). This gives you more control and helps prevent stretching the fabric out.
Now once you have successfully stepped in with both of your legs, gently pull the shapewear until your mid-thigh section. Bend forward slightly as you pull it up to your waist. You may wiggle and shimmy during this step. Don’t yank!
Use your hands to smooth and guide the fabric upward in sections. Insert one hand into your shaper and extend it into your upper thigh section. Pull the excess fatty tissue up for a perky butt.
Pull the back of your shaper up again for a further uplift. Make any further adjustment to smooth out the fit and position.
Look in the mirror or observe how the final fit feels on your body.
If you're struggling to breathe or the seams are digging painfully into your skin, that may be a sign to size up.
Wearing shapewear for the first time can feel like a workout—but it’s worth it once you understand the fit, feel, and function. With the right size and a little technique, you’ll get the sculpted support without the struggle. Remember: it’s not about squeezing into a smaller size, it’s about feeling strong, secure, and confident in your own skin. Shapewear is a hug, not a harness.
Because shapewear isn’t about changing your body, it’s about embracing it with a little extra support <3
